What I Got, And What I Thought About It For 03/07/07

Superman/Batman # 32

No: Superman’s love for Lois free’s him from the alien overminds control, well now that’s original.

No: Batman makes a questionable choice using an artifact he knows to be dangerous for what feels like plot dictated reasons.

No: A gratuitous Lobo cameo that is neither funny, nor needed.

In short?: Just plain no. The next story arc better be really interesting or this is getting dropped.

Star Wars: Legacy # 9

Yes: We pull back this issue to see what both the Sith Empire and the True Empire are up to.

Maybe: I have to admit I like my art a little cleaner than this issues artist. It wasn’t bad, everyone looked like themselves, just a little different is all.

Yes: A torture scene with enough shown and implied to get the point across but by no means too graphic.

Maybe: As much as I like the idea of this series I do have to wonder how long they can go before they either spoil, or massively contradict what is going on in the novels set closer in time to the Star Wars era most fans know.

In Short?: If you are a fan of Star Wars and want something that doesn’t feel like a rehash of a rehash then most definitely yes.

Welcome To Tranquility #4

Yes: As always the flashback material is somehow found to directly relate to the action going on in the here and now.

Yes: Characters who happen to be female, not female characters.

Maybe: Did I catch a changed premise? I seem to recall that Maximum Man was said to be an accountant in the first issue.

Yes: In one scene, the character of the ex-sherriff went from being mildly interesting to being in my opinion one of the most heroic people in the entire book.

Maybe: I’m hoping that as the story progresses the younger characters known collectively as the snots will show something to make me want to do something other than smack them.

No: I am not going looking. I am telling myself that Gail Simone made up the moronhome that is “Eternalrestfan.com” Because deep down I know if I go looking I will find similar stupidity on the web and be less than thrilled in the finding.

Yes: The scene between the ex-hero and his ex-nemesis was very sweet.

No: Okay, I can understand why the sherrif and her deputies wear gloves, but the mayor? A style thing I suppose but still it seems odd.

In Short?: Yes. If you love old school superheros. If you love them with a real world twist. If you just plain love good writing. God Yes.

Stephen Kings The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born #2

Yes: A comic book that I “get” the first time through but have to read many more times to “understand”.

Yes: Jae Lee’s art which, truly is Art.

Yes: The text backups which delve into the mythology of the Dark Tower universe.

No: Icky spider things.

In Short?: Yes. This comic is going to be one of the ones I hand to people to look at if not read who want to claim that comics aren’t art.

The Authority #1&2

Yes: Grant Morrison is writing it.

Yes: Grant Morrison who for all his psychidelic strangeness, has an unabashed love for classic superhero gimmicks, gives us The Authority visiting “our” reality. I’m Geeking.

Yes: Gene Ha with a project worthy of him. (Not that Top Ten wasn’t but I am glad to see him with another one, instead of forced to take fill in crap assignments)

Yes: Morrison making it easy to understand what’s going on without pages of exposition.

Yes: “We’re not the droids you’re looking for.” Come on does that bit ever stop being funny? I don’t think so.

Maybe: Some people will complain about the lateness of the book. Personally I’d rather have three really good issues a year than 12 so so, borderline crap issues.

No: Because the Authority are not really visiting our reality even if Midnighter de-limbs the shrub and beats him to death with his own arms it’s still not going to be real.

In Short?: Yes. This is Morrison showing a spark of mad genius that I see in All Star Superman, but to be honest have not seen so far yet in his Batman issues.

JLA #6

Yes: A fight scene in which everyone there plays a part and no-one feels extraneous.

Yes: Kathy Sutton doing more than just cowering waiting to be saved.

Maybe: Sadly some people are going to focus more on the display of violence than on the whole of the issue. Personally if Grundy is not shown as being capable of truly horrific things he becomes less of a threat.

Maybe: Um, yeah know guys just because Grundy died doesn’t mean he has to come back dumb next time. Hint hint, clue clue hint.

Maybe: Okay, I’m not unhappy with the way this arc ended, but let’s not fall into the every story a tragedy trap okay Mr. Metzler?

In Short?: Yes. I am enjoying this very much and am looking forward to where the JLA will be going from here.

Well kids thems the opinings for this time. Until next week;

Peace
And
Long
Life
