That’s right I’m in love. Well okay, not really. But to a hard core Comic Book Geek it feels that way. Back when I lived in Seattle, there were a couple of different comic book shops that I’d frequent. I never bothered getting on as a file customer with any of them because I never had a problem getting the stuff I wanted and I liked doing my part spreading the support around. When I moved out east to be with my s/o I quickly discovered that there were no comic shops in the immediate area. So I contented myself with the newsstand and from time to time I’d order comics from Mid-Town Comics. Mid-Town is a great store and they have one of the easiest to order from websites I’ve ever seen. But there is just something about the experience of going into a physical store, picking up your weekly supply of comics, checking the shelves for good stuff you might have missed, that ordering online just doesn’t quite match. When the s/o and I switched job locations to a nearby college town I was delighted to discover that there were not one but two comic book shops. However by that point I was only picking titles up occasionally, so I didn’t bother to get on file with either of them. Finally came the day that I figured it was time to get serious about collecting again. I talked to an employee at the one shop, and well I wasn’t entirely thrilled with what I heard. Now don’t get me wrong the person was perfectly polite, but they kept wanting to push the online version of their service, which really wasn’t what I was interested in. This particular shop has since gone to an online only business so I suspect that they were already preparing to move in that direction. So I went and tried out the other shop. I was immediately in love. Bigger, brighter, a better stock of graphic novels and back issues. Plus much better hours. Gary’s Comics and More. Still it took me a while do make the jump to get back on file. Finally last week I turned in my info and boom. The great thing about Gary’s is that each Friday he sends all his file customers an email letting you know what’s coming next week so it’s easy to have him add stuff to your pull that sounds interesting. Gary is often in the store and is very knowledgeable and enjoyable to talk with. His staff is as well. Over all it’s one of the nicest shops I’ve been in. It’s nice to know I’ll be able to get what I need to feed my Geek Addiction without having to run all over the place looking. It’s nice to be in love.

Peace
And
Long
Life

Alright then. I’m moving Geek Love back to Blogger. I’ll keep mirroring my posts over at wordpress but the main “home” of geek love will be at Blogger. The reason why I left for wordpress in the first place was solely one of necessity. My laptop had been fried and I was on an older machine running Windows ’98. I had downloaded Internet Explorer 6 but it was not fully loving the ’98. As a result Blogger would let me post into the title but not the body of the post. At the time I was not certain how quickly I would be able to get a new computer, but now that I am at home on a machine running Windows Vista, I have decided to go back to Blogger. Mainly I feel it’s a little more user friendly, plus with wordpress I was only able to see gross hits, whereas with blogger I can see individual users and get a better idea of traffic. So here we go again.

Lately I’ve been thinking about gender presumptions in super hero comics. I’m choosing my words very precisely because to be honest I think that it’s reached a point where the word sexism is being grossly overused. I think a lot of time the people, (admittedly especially the males) writing and reading comics are not malicious in their intent. Rather they are thoughtless in their presumptions. So unless I am intending to talk about something I feel is malicious in intent, or just so godawful that there’s no excuse not to see it, I will not be choosing to use the word sexism. The purpose of Small Wonders, is in some ways the opposite of Really Geek Thoughts. Rather than taken on some grand idea or concept I’m going to be focusing in as tightly as possible on something. After all you can’t build a house all at once. And sometimes I think we members of Geek Nation are very good about obsessing about all the details except the important ones.

So, let’s start off with a debate style resolved statement. (Note I’m not intending this as a debate but if someone reads this and has any thoughts pro or con to what I’m saying I’m always happy to hear them.) Resolved, comic book fans want heroes that are heroic but have a dimension of believability and realism about them so they can better identify with them and their lives.

This is the main reason for one of the oldest concepts in superhero comics, the secret identity. It’s Clark Kent, that makes it possible for readers to identify with Superman. But when a character in either heroic or civilian id, acts in ways that are to far outside the readers zone of shared experience, they have a much harder time connecting with said character. Sometimes it’s big stuff. But sometimes it’s the little things. Such as, why is it that every, and I mean every female super character wears full make up all the time? Really, I mean it. Check your comics. Go ahead I’ll wait.

Back? Well what did you find? Because if you found one that doesn’t let me know. I’d be interested to know about it. To be honest this is something that was nagging in the back of my mind for a bit now but it didn’t come into the forefront of my consciousness until reading Teen Titans 43. Specifically page 20, panel three. Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) takes off her mask, her fully concealing mask, to reveal a face with what looks to be a fresh coat of lipstick and eyeshadow.

Now let me digress to tell you a little story. As most of you know if you have read enough of these little musings of mine, I’m not a woman. However I live with one. And while I’m not perfectly observant at all times, I do pride myself on trying to pay attention to her preferences, dislikes etc. One of the things I can tell you without descending into TMI territory is that she is not much for make-up. Sometimes when we’re going out somewhere nice, sometimes just because she feels like it. But one thing I can just about guarantee you is that when the warm weather comes she will be wearing make up as seldom as possible because she tends to feel icky and nasty wearing it when she’s hot. So, now coming back around to my point, why exactly is Cassandra Cain, who is wearing a full body fight suit, and a full face mask, wear makeup while she’s in working clothes? For that matter why do a lot of these she crusaders for justice? Or evil? It just doesn’t make sense. And I think that may be one small problem among many that are building to a lot of these larger problems.

Considering the fact that most of these artists have no problem making the male characters mouths fully defined without falling back on the use of “lipstick”, they should equally have no problem doing it for female characters.

Therefore I have to conclude that the reason why every female, hero, villain or supporting wears lipstick is because, of unchallenged gender presumptions. So I’m making the challenge. Superhero comic book writers and artists. Stop for a minute and think, does it make sense for a female character to be in full make up in this scene? Does it make sense from a character stand point? If not? Then don’t do it. Draw her without it.

Okay okay, I know it’s a really, really tiny nit to pick. But here’s the thing, maybe if we all start working with the tiny nits, we can then work up to the bigger issues. After all if a writer or artist can’t handle something as simple as the notion that a lot of women would never in a million years wear makeup while smashing the universe conquering plans of Evil Overlord X, then how will we ever expect them to handle the notion that not every female on the planet wants to get married and become a well kept baby machine?

Peace
And
Long
Life

Toriach

Well sit right back and you’ll hear a tale. A tale of a fateful trip, that started when my s/o spilled pop on the laptop and killed it…And thus began the odyssey. We have a very old, very slow laptop that runs Windows 98, and some of the keys don’t work because one of the cats barfed on the keyboard, but it was certainly better than nothing. Then a friend of the family turned out to have a similar computer that was in better shape. So for the last few weeks we’ve been running on that. Then this week the refund check came in and a computer shopping we went.

Being of modest means we opted to shop Wal-Mart (I know that it’s not exactly a bastion of enlightened capitalism but they do have fairly decent stuff at prices we can afford). We decided to get the gateway made E-Machine, which comes with a tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. The tower is 3.33GHz, with 512MB ram, and a 120 GB hard drive. It’s got a r/w DVD/CD drive. It comes with Windows Vista pre-installed. The monitor is 15.4 inch diagonal LCD low depth monitor.

So far I’m really enjoying it. While there is a bit of a learning curve with Vista it’s not as bad as some are making it out to be. What’s really fun are the “gadgets” that the program comes with. Basically they’re kind of like little applications, ranging from the useful, (Weather updates) to the not so useful, (Tic-Tac-Toe).

Ultimately I’m happy with the purchase and am glad to be on a machine that isn’t heading for obsolete ville.

Peace
And
Long
Life

Well sit right back and you’ll hear a tale. A tale of a fateful trip, that started when my s/o spilled pop on the laptop and killed it…And thus began the odyssey. We have a very old, very slow laptop that runs Windows 98, and some of the keys don’t work because one of the cats barfed on the keyboard, but it was certainly better than nothing. Then a friend of the family turned out to have a similar computer that was in better shape. So for the last few weeks we’ve been running on that. Then this week the refund check came in and a computer shopping we went.Being of modest means we opted to shop Wal-Mart (I know that it’s not exactly a bastion of enlightened capitalism but they do have fairly decent stuff at prices we can afford).

Peace
And
Long
Life

As I was doing my usual scan of the blogosphere I discovered from Karen Healy’s columnthat it was recently “Blog Against Sexism Day”. And I’m sure that if I one took the time to look you’d find all kinds of well written blogs by a great many women, talking about their experiences surviving, and/or fighting against sexism. This is something that is of tremendous value. However there is sometimes a tendency for people to forget that very few bad things in this world run just one way. This is often the case with sexism.

Reverese Sexism: Putting an old lie where it belongs

From Wikionary: SexismNoun:Unfair treatment or discrimination based on a difference of sex or gender.
Looking upReverse Sexismonly sends you to a search page as your told that there are no exact matches for the term. The reason why is really very simple.

There is no such thing as “reverse sexism”. It’s a term that was coined by someone, somewhere to describe sexism against men. I’ve never liked it as I’ve always found it to have a vaguely dismissive under (and sometimes over)tone. As if it’s almost okay because after all that women have had to overcome why should anyone have to waste their time worrying about the feelings of a few men. I know that’s not how most people mean it when they use the term, but that’s always how it’s made me feel.

There is also an assumption made by some that when sexism denigrates a woman, that any men involved are willing participants. As if by dint of gender all males are presumed to on some level if only subconscious to side with each other.

Being assumed to be a less fit parent than your spouse in a divorce case is sexism.

Having a repair person talk to you even though it was your partner that asked the question is sexism.

Being told that you have no right to complain about your abuse when thousands of women are abused everyday is sexism.

Those are just three over simplified examples. They are all sexism, and they are all wrong.

Anytime that a man starts talking about sexism, there are always a vocal minority that want to shout him down. They will quote statistics, they will belittle, they will get indignant. The assumption made by some is that a man who speaks out against sexism directed at men is either belittling sexism against women, or is just whining.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Most men who have been affected by sexism are usually only truly aware of how wrong it is, because they already know and agree that to judge or act towards anyone based on their gender is wrong. And if it’s wrong to do it to a woman, why shouldn’t it be just as wrong to do it to a man?

We have met the enemy and he is us

The unfortunate truth though is that while there are truly women who would rather bellow at the top of their lungs than listen to a man talk about how sexism has negatively affected him, it is most likely another man, or even more insidious pop culture in general that does the most to try to silence those who would speak out.

Pop culture, be it comic books, TV, or movies, love to show the lone male hero, standing against impossible odds. There’s nothing wrong with that fantasy in moderation. But it’s high time that if we want to not see the past repeat itself that we demand other images to raise our children with. A man who is comfortable working with a woman in a position of authority for one. That image is starting to come into existence but it is still not nearly common enough. The scene I’d love to see in a movie is a male character saying to someone who’s just asked him how they’re going to disarm the nuclear warhead, “I don’t know. Ask her. She’s the bomb disposal expert.” And then indicate the female character that had just been treated dismissively a few minutes earlier.

Also right now I can only think of one example in pop culture where a male character is shown dealing with the after effects of being abused and violated.

When I finally found the courage after two years to leave a relationship that was mentally, emotionally and physically abusive, I found that the places I had looked to in the past for fictional role models suddenly failed me. Except for one.

A great many people know of the show Star Trek: The Next Generation. And many people who know of that show even if they’ve never really watched it, know of the character known as The Borg. One of the best known and best loved episodes from that series deals with Captain Picard being taken by the Borg and made into one of them. The two parter details his former shipmates struggle to stop an enemy that now has all of the captains knowledge. What most people who weren’t regular viewers of the series know, is that there was an episode after that. It showed a recovering Picard going home to visit with his brother. It also in that episode showed Picard breaking down and sobbing in his brothers arms talking about how helpless he felt while he was under the Borg’s control. I found myself crying along with Picard as I thought about all the times I had told myself I was worthless, hoping it would hurt less when this person I thought I loved told me the same thing.

It is getting better though. A little at a time. Just as changing the way women are depicted in pop culture is a long uphill climb so is changing the way men are depicted. Sometimes help in this struggle can come from the most surprising places.

The light at the end of the tunnel isn’t a train, it’s a mouse?

I honestly don’t remember how I ended up watching Disney’s The Little Mermaid. I think I was spending the day with my then girlfriend and her daughter. But I remember being amazed because instead of a one dimensional square jawed “hero type”, the prince seemed as lonely, and confused, and as needing to find someone to love and love him in return as the princess character Ariel. I was kind of amazed. This was something I had not seen before on screen, and in a Disney cartoon of all places. The trend I’m amazed to say has quietly continued. Right up to the present day where in Pixar’s Incredibles, Mr. Incredible admits that he is trying to shut his wife and children out of his life because he fears their being hurt, and he learns that such attitudes lead to nothing good.

And there are other examples as well.

In Welcome To Tranquility by Gail Simone and Neil Googe, male characters of a variety of ages and types follow the lead of the towns female sherriff without a hint of resentment or condescencion. The only exception being a character who is shown from the outset to be a big dumb jerk.

In Groundhog Day, a man who personifies male arrogance is helped to learn that life is about more than just his needs and wants, and that all people have value.

In Stranger Than Fiction, we get to see a man who is very introverted and is brought out of his shell by a free spirited woman who he meets thanks ironically to his job. We also get to see a friendship between two male characters that is thoughtful and tender and unselfconscious.

In Weird Science, the two geek males really just want to find girls who understand them.

In the comic book realm one of the first superheros, Superman, is often shown to be openly interdependent with the people in his life. He realizes that openly needing people does not make one weak.

The road goes ever onward.

The situation for men has gotten and is slowly continuing to get better, just as it has for women. However the battle is far from won, and the war is far from over. Every moment of every day men must be ready to battle sexism. By speaking out against it when it is directed at women. By speaking out against it when it is directed at them. Even when it is “positive” sexism, (ie, an assumption of capability based solely on gender) we must speak out against it.

The world wide web can be a wonderful tool to help with that. It allows us to support each other in this struggle and to help highlight those things both positive and negative that are happening that impact this struggle.

In the end, until all of us are free and equal none of us are.

Peace
And
Long
Life

Peace
And
Long
Life

I have a younger brother. Younger by three years. Back in the day he and I would fight like cats and dogs. Everytime we’d get into it at some point I’d have him down on the ground, subdued, and he’d swear that he was through. So I’d let him up. And he’d bounce up, make a beeline for me and it would be on again. Generally speaking I still take people at their word. Oh I can smell out a lie if I have to, or figure out deeper motivations. But distrust is not my default setting. So until I did a little reading around the blogosphere I was pretty sure that Captain America was dead. But the consensus is that he’s not really. I suppose I should be happy. But I’m not. Now let me be very upfront. Personally I don’t care two figs for ol’ Cap. Not my kind of character. But I know that to a lot of people especially older ones he holds a place equal to Superman’s. I hated that they “killed” him. And I hate even more that they have done all this simply in the name of sales. To be perfectly honest at this point I am pretty well sick of Marvel as it stands now. It’s been a long time since there was much by them that I wanted to read, and at this point with the exception of a few projects set outside their main universe and one project inside it, the whole company could drop into the ocean and I really would not see much change in my buying habits. Absolutely nothing about Civil War has felt organic. Rather it’s all felt like someone sitting down with a calculator figuring out what the net value of each costume change, character alteration, and death is. It feels cynical, and money driven. And honestly it makes me kind of sick and sad inside. Honestly it feels like Marvel is going down the road that DC started down over a decade ago with the death of Superman. A time that saw characters killed, crippled, crazed and replaced solely for reasons of sales. DC is just now really starting to come out of that time. I wonder how long it will take Marvel to see the light.
